Timeline Setting for Sony EX1 Footage
Posted by Sascha Engel on August 13, 2011 at 8:31 amHi,
I just finished editing an item, which I shot with the Sony EX1 and then ingested into FCP with Log & Transfer tool, the timeline set itself to: XDCAM 1080p25 Codec.
I used multiple Fxs mainly Red Giant Mojo for the CC.
When I render my timeline to watch, I wondered, if for that material it is better to set the render options for the TL to RGD or 10-Bit YUV or 8-Bit YUV.
Any thoughts on this?Thanx.

The first thing I would do was to avoid setting my sequence as EX-1.
Unless you are delivering XDCAM, that makes no sense.About the render options, the one that makes no sense is “RGB”.
10b rendering (High Precision), makes more sense if you set your sequence to a 10b codec.

August 13, 2011 at 9:54 amHi Raphael,
The weird thinh is, that i did not set the codex to xdcam. FCP did that automatically when I dropped my first clip into the timeline.
Besides that, I have just the choice of 8-Bit YUV or “always render in high recision YUV” – the check box with YUV 10-Bit is greyed out in the timeline options.
Any thoughts on that?
When I logged and transfered the EX-1 footage, i had my preferences of the Log& Transfer tool set to Apple ProRes 422.
Any idea, why it autmatically is choosing the XDCAM Format?
Should I force the timeline into Apple ProRes?
ThanxSascha

and one more Q: Is there a significant difference in setting the render options to Super-White instead of White with EX-1 Footage?

As should be if you are dropping XDCAM stuff in the time-line.[Sascha Engel] “Besides that, I have just the choice of 8-Bit YUV or “always render in high recision YUV” – the check box with YUV 10-Bit is greyed out in the timeline options.”
that’s correct too.
You have grayed “Render 10b material in High Precision..” because you have no 10b stuff on your time-line.[Sascha Engel] “When I logged and transfered the EX-1 footage, i had my preferences of the Log& Transfer tool set to Apple ProRes 422.

No idea, but why do you want to transcode to Prores?Set your sequence to Prores and select “Render all YUV material in High..”.
[Sascha Engel] ” Is there a significant difference in setting the render options to Super-White instead of White with EX-1 Footage?”
Nothing about quality.
Super-Whites affects only to the RGB material (stills, QT Animation/NONE,/other RGB codecs) you import to FC.
Depending if you choose “SuperWhites” or not, RGB values will be mapped 0-110% or 0-100%.

August 13, 2011 at 12:12 pmHi Rafael,
Thanx again for ur quick answer.
Just one is totally confused me now: first u write that u don’t understand why I had it in xdcam codec since I’m not delivery to xdcam. But in ur last post u write, that u don’t understand why I transcode to ProRes. Since I have FCP 6 my workflow with EX footage was always to transfer it to ProRes in the Log&Transfer window. Is there something wrong with that procedure?Thanx again.
Sascha.

Sascha,
IMO, the best way is to edit the XDCAM footage on a Prores sequence.
That’s about speed, RT performance and quality.
I conform the sequence with an XDCAM clip, then I change the sequence codec to Prores and I start to edit.
Before exporting the sequence (no while you are editing), set “Render all YUV..”, and “Motion Render: BEST”.BTW, Is the new MB looks faster than the previous version?

August 13, 2011 at 2:07 pmWell, one of the great things about the new MB is that it’s not hardware or video card related anymore since you can switch between CPU and GPU based rendering.
I did not make a comparison test, since I do not have the old magic bullet anymore.
But by feeling – yes, not like double speed, but it is faster.
and there’s a lot of other new things that are great:
– Calypso – a new tool to clean skin – great for cheesy video clips 😉
– All types of vignettes can now be ratio changed like in COLOR – so no more limitation to only full circles.
– You have one short cut “\” with which you can toggle your grade on & off like in COLOR – great time safer and speeds up the workflow!!!!
– Has the new 3 Way Colour Wheel correction tool – like Colorista has.
– Lens distortion repair tool – to compensate lens distortion – or create one if you need it.
-“Pop” also a new tool – which is a bit comparable to “Vibrance” in PS – it pops colors and contrast more – easy adjustment with one slider and it does quiet an awesome job – specially when you need to work quick and rough.
– better scopes
new haze and flare tool and some more new toolsShit, I sound already like a MB salesman 😉 no, seriously – it’s a great update!
And thanx for all your good tips. Actually that’s how I worked before with EX1 Footage, but then somebody told me once, I should transcode to Prores – runs more stable and faster in FX Rendering.
But apparently it’s not true.Greetings,
Sascha
