New PC set up
Posted by Ian Collister on October 31, 2007 at 5:17 pmIf i was in the market for a new pc, what should i be looking at as far as hardware goes? I cant afford a proper workstation, but what kind of cpu/motherboard/memory should i be looking at? Im thinking something that can reneder nice and fast etc. Should i invest the majority of my cash in lots of memory of the cpu i can find? Or is it all in the graphics card?
Any help appreciated as usual.
cheers

November 1, 2007 at 1:50 pmI am in the market for building a new dedicated video machine for premiere, afx and some 3d apps. From my research, the most performance bang for your buck is a quad core processor, as all of the new adobe vidoe programs make use of these for rendering. Ram is another place you should not skimp. The more the better. Also, I have seen some information which suggests that running 64 bit vs. 32 bit make a substantial difference in rendering times in some graphic intensive programs. Another benefit of 64 bit is the ability to utilize more ram than 32 bit. This also speeds up rendering time. For the most part, video cards do nothing for rendering times. Take this post with a grain of salt, as I am only conveying information second hand from a variety of sources. But I have spent several months looking at this very issue and plan on building my machine sometime before the end of the year. Best of luck!

November 1, 2007 at 2:16 pmI also have some issues with preformance and speed.
I have a Windows bassed Dell 690 workstation dual quad machine that seems to be very fast. I’m runnning windows 2000 pro with 2 gig of ram.
I am looking to update my opperating system to vista 64 bit so that I can stock up on RAM.
Questions: I run AE 7.0, Avid Express HD, and many of Adobe’s CS3 graphic programs. What kind of upgrade andor compatability issues do you think I might run accross?
Thanks in advance.

November 1, 2007 at 3:49 pmFull disclosure department: Thanks for the vote of confidence Dave, but my info came from the web as well, as I’m a Mac guy too. But it came from a number of sources, describing a number of applications.
That said, why not check for yourself? Google “after effects” and “vista” .
Also, this info may not be up-to-date, but check it out anyway:
