  • time to switch to Adobe?

Adobe is offering 50% off it’s production packages if you are switching from FCP or AVID. Seems pretty attractive.

I’ve been using FC since 2005. I’ve got a few projects that are still being edited. I’m a freelance editor and I work alone. So there are fewer reasons not to switch. Seems like Apple is ditching the professional editing platform. What’s the future of Final Cut? (what about Color and the others?).

If I’m going to make the switch, might as well do it for 50% off, right?

Go ahead, you first. I’m stickin’ with FCP7. My bet is Apple reworks FCPX and incorporates all the things we had in FCP7.

When? 12 months from now? Sounds like they went in a completely different direction and now they have to stop the train and go back the other direction.

Well, actually, FCPX has some amazing features that AVID and Premier doesn’t have. So, if they just add back in the old stuff we need and maybe even add even more features, then we might actually be ahead in the game. Big ‘If’ I know. I just won’t justify the hardware change to AVID and can’t even say the phrase to clients… “I edit on Premier.”

Avid is also offering a promo for folks switching from FCP. Both the Adobe and Avid promos expire the end of September. So I’m waiting a bit.

If you use Photoshop or Illustrator, the Adobe Production Premium suite promo makes a lot of sense for the price. I will probably wind up getting it…

No sense to run any direction.
FC.7, AVID and PP are the same than one month ago.
    FCX doesn’t adds nothing.
Unless in need to invest in new posts, why to rush?

FCPX adds 64-bit speed which is HUGE.

Yes, this will probably be my course of action. I’m running fcp 7 and I’ve really no reason to change, even if fcpx WAS what everyone was hoping for. Heck, the only reason I upgraded to 7 was so I could have the different flavors of ProRes, like Proxy. That was almost worth the upgrade price. Add in Color 1.5 and it was worth the upgrade. 7 is working great for me.

Of course, the allure of bigger, faster, stronger is always there.

Maybe this will help us all. I’ve just bought a new 2TB system drive and will partition it into 3 for OSXSnow/FCP7, OSXSnow/FCPX and OSXLion/FCPX, like David Roth suggests. This way I can work easily without worry for quite a while.

[Ernie Santella] “FCPX adds 64-bit speed which is HUGE.”
    Speed for what?
To render and export few presets and without any control on what you are doing?
First time I saw Premier (no yet PRO) in 1996, they told me “this is the future of video editing”.
Well it took few years to make from PP a professional tool.
Lets see how takes for Apple to give FCX the operability and control in FCP.
Then will be an option to consider.

I was speaking about rendering inside FCP being faster in 64-bit. Hey, don’t get me wrong I’m no fanboy of FCPX. I think it sucks and is far from being ready for anything Primetime. But, I’m willing to give it a try for some very simple internal projects. Thanks why I’m keeping FCP7 on a partition and working with that for ALL my clients projects. I just don’t want to switch right now and buy new hardware.
