I’m digging in; how do I set up the bunker? (FCS 3 drive imaging)
Well, we’re going to sit tight with FCS 3, can’t afford a crossgrade or change for a while. The funny thing is, I’ve been on FCP6 all this time and it took my office two years to process the paperwork to upgrade to FCP7, the box with the FCS3 disks arrived two weeks ago. We haven’t installed the FCP7/FCS3 upgrade yet, but we plan to, after some of our current projects are completed. The uncertainty over the updaters has me worried. Maybe I should archive off the current projects and make the upgrade this week, in case the updaters go away for good.
What I think I want to do is completely nuke the drives of my suite, leaving just the OS, make a very clean install of FCS3, say a bruccha and try to run all the updaters, then freeze the thing in carbonite, i.e., image the entire system drive to that point, to an archival drive I will unplug and shelve. That imaged drive is what I will then use to restore the system, should the need arise in the next 2-3 years of using FCS3.
Will this plan work? What else do I need to make that work? Is there a freeware or shareware drive imaging tool I need to get to accomplish this brain transplant/cloning?

“The number of Mac system clones on my shelf and in my computer right now exceed the number of drives that most people have ever owned in their lives, and all are made by CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner).
I was unfaithful once or twice and used SuperDuper, but it was neither as easy nor as reliable as CCC, so I recommitted to my honey and now we’re going steady.

Thanks for the tip: we’ve decided to go ahead and do it this afternoon, so I’m grateful for ANY advice on the specific procedure and a list of what to make sure I’ve copied over. We’re on an 8-core machine running Leopard right now. Any potential gotchas like quicktime or anything that I might miss when just copying the system drive?
