Snow Leopard and FCP 6.0.6
Posted by Dan Lacloche on June 23, 2011 at 11:44 pmAre there any issues with Snow Leopard and FCP 6? I have a MacBook with OS 10.5.8 and FCP 6.0.6 and everything is just fine. I’m thinking about updating to OS 10.6 because my iCal doesn’t sync with MobileMe or my iPhone Calendar app anymore. (Apple warned me of this for a few months with emails, but I never updated to OS 10.6 because I thought I heard something about it messing with QuickTime & therefore FCP.)
Any thoughts? Advice? Horror stories?
Thanks.

June 23, 2011 at 11:47 pmI forgot to mention that I run a small business, and I can’t afford to have any down time. If OS 10.6 takes down my FCP, I’m in big trouble.
Thanks.

You need to get fear out of the equation by getting in the habit of using Carbon Copy Cloner (it’s free all over the Internet) to routinely make a bootable clone of your Mac system drive to an inexpensive firewire drive that you keep on standby at all times. If you make a clone before running any update or upgrade, such as the one you’re asking about now, your clone will allow you to go back in time in a matter of minutes should you encounter any issues. It takes all the worry out of Mac ownership and will make you a hero to your clients should your clone ever save the day.
As almost every Cow member who’s been here for the last few years will tell you, I’ve been pushing this safety technique in this forum for a long time, and there are very few who haven’t been saved once or twice by following the advice. Gee, that rhymes…

June 24, 2011 at 12:11 amI would honestly consider erase and install of the OS over archive and install. Time Machine backup, disks…etc. I have your exact setup on my personal computer, and am not planning on upgrading to Snow. SL is 64-bit over Leopards 32-bit, but things are nice the way they are (plus it’s my personal deal)

June 24, 2011 at 2:04 amI’m running an octo core with SL and FCS2.
I stopped updating the OS at 10.6.2 because the next version (I think it was 6.4) broke everything to do with mpeg2. No audio from DVDSP, DVD player, or even MPEGstreamclip. So I had to roll back.
This has happened to others, but not everyone. Before the roll back I tried to reinstall the mpeg2 component, and do other suggested fixes that worked for a few others but the only thing that worked is the roll back. Which is fine because I was doing the update just for the sake of keeping up. I wasn’t having any issues.

https://www.sstdigitalmedia.comI have a system, it has stuff in it, and stuff hooked to it. I have a camera, it can record stuff. I read the manuals, and know how to use this stuff and lots of other stuff too.

June 24, 2011 at 8:45 pmIf you’re making the change because of compatibility for Mobile Me, didn’t Apple just recently EOL THAT too?

September 2, 2011 at 11:56 amI recently bought a new iMac. Shiny! It has snow leopard 10.6.8 and Final Cut 6.0.6 has been a total nightmare on it.
My 4 year old mac book pro has been using plain old leopard with final cut 6.0.6 and has had no problems. NONE!
At first I thought the problems on my iMac may have been because I installed Red Giant Looks software. Some forums suggested this may cause problems with Final Cut. I have uninstalled Red Giant and every single file relating to it. No help at all.
I strongly suspect that Snow Leopard is the culprit.

September 20, 2012 at 6:15 pmHi Dan – do you by any chance have a link to directions on the steps to use Carbon Copy Cloner before attempting an upgrade? Thank you!
