Macbook Pro to CRT Monitor
Hi All,
So the problem is as follows:
I have a 17″ Macbook Pro with mini-display out, I recently was donated a Sony CRT preview monitor. The monitor only has SDI and S-Video inputs, and of course Apple only makes mini-display to DVI or HDMI.
I’m currently trying to get signal out by using the Mini-Display – DVI adapter, then using Apple’s DVI – Video/SVideo adapter, then SVideo in. This doesn’t seem to be cutting it though, the mac seems to know I’m trying to connect to another source but I can’t get anything to display on the CRT.
I’m wondering if anyone has found themselves in a similar boat. The easiest solution is to buy a monitor with DVI inputs or get an AJA/Blackmagic solution, but those are luxuries that I can’t make a reality at the moment. If anyone has any thoughts on how to make this work I’m all ears, Thanks!

Hi Nathan,
Your computer needs to know which kind of monitor is at the other side of the cable, to try to put out the correct signal for that monitor.
Have you tried “Detect displays”?
In the System Preferences.

Recently I was introduced to “poor man” process. The device is called Canopus ADVC110. It outputs perfect SD picture from HD time line. No need to doll out for ajas. For the purpose of preview it’s more than enough.

That costs more than the DVI/SDI solutions and gives just DV quality.

thanks to pointing to it.
Nathan asked about alternative to aja/blackmagic solution. Canopus three-to-five times cheaper then any external aja/blackmagic device. Furthermore, what point to have hd video signal out as you have SD preview monitor?
I believe if you can get through dvi-mini-port to SD monitor without paying a dime, it’s worth it. If not, i’d rather pay for Canopus.Sony PMW-EX3, Canon Mark II 5D, FCS2 in Moscow

Well, he started by asking for a “Mini-DVI/SDI” solution.
The Canopus device costs some 275$$ while the BM is 375$$.
The BM is a 36% more expensive. That’s a bargain for working in SDI instead of DV.Anyway was just to talk.
I don’t think Nathan should spend much money, if any at all, in and old CRT. For less money than any of those adapters you can buy a nice LCD monitor that will do any job better. The only reason to keep an old CRT monitor would to checking interlacing issues.BTW, Nathan: If you Google “Mini-DVI to S-Video”, you will find few adaptors.
The one from Apple, costs just 17 bucks.

I beg your pardon, didn’t you notice the second part of his inquiry? I don’t argue on merits of adapter vs. canopus vs. aja. I stated my position on merits of canopus vs. aja/blackmagic issue. I don’t understand why we spend so much time squabbling over it here?

How about using a borrowed a DV camcorder, or a cheap one from e-bay?

I did try to use Detect Displays, but the results were the same. As for the apple adapter you mention in a later post, my laptop only has Mini-Display out, no Mini-DVI. I think that the white 13″ are the only ones that have the Mini-DVI port now, and all the Macbook pros have Mini-Display.
