59.94 vs. 29.97
I am recording real time from a switcher into FCP. the switcher is a for-a and the For-a is set to 1080i 59.94. I have heard there is no real difference between 59.94 an 29.97. How should FCP be set to capture into DVCPro HD – 59.94 or 29.97?

1080/59.94i is 29.97fps.
Its 59.94 interlaced fields per second.

This is what i have been reading. So explain to me why file sizes are different and there is even the option if it is really the same hting

What capture card are you using? I would suggest capturing to that card’s preset for 1080i prores. Why do you want dvcprohd?

For 720p it really is 59.94 FRAMES per second.
If using DVCPro HD in 1080, make sure it’s the 1080i29.97 setting and not the 720p59.94 setting.
Also, I’d use ProRes LT instead. It’s full raster, 10bit and about the same data rate as DVCPro HD (100mb/sec).

As has been explained, 1080i = 59.94 Fields per second = 29.97 frames per second.
Dual link or 3G sources are 1080p59.94 FRAMES per second, but I’m pretty sure you aren’t using a 3G HDSDI source.

I have a Decklink as well. For 1080i DVCPRO HD you want Blackmagic 1080i 59.94 DVCPROHD. Note on the right of the screen shot, it is 29.97 fps. There is no 59.94 FPS option with DVCPRO HD 1080i.
With 720p, you have two options. 720p 59.94, which IS 59.94 FRAMES per second and 720p 29.97, which is 29.97 fps. Note that 720p 29.97 is somewhat unconventional, as broadcasters that use 720p (like FOX and ABC) use 59.94.
As others have stated, ProRes is a better codec in most instances, but if you are capturing DVCPRO HD footage or have older hardware or an older version of FCP, there is nothing wrong with using the DVCPRO HD codec.
As Jeremy stated, 1080p 59.94 FRAMES per second exists in some codecs (including ProRes) for some very high end formats, but its not likely thats what you are using.

It confusing to some because people, and manufacturers, mix frame rates with field rates. In my opinion one should stay consistent with FRAME rate.
29.97i not 59.94i
