Where are media assets being used ?
Hi
I am working on a project that has come from another editor and some of the clips are coming up as offline media. This is ok, as for the main sequence I have sorted most of the problems, however there are a handful of media files that are offline but I don’t know where they are being used and there are about 20 or so sequences. Is there any easy way in FCP to search for all the uses of a media file such that I can get a report telling me where it is being referenced from ? I am also trying to organise the FCP browser and bins, and knowing where clips are being used would be very helpful.

You can right click on any clip and select “Reveal In Finder” to see where it resides.
Hopefully, you’re not going to find that the other editor failed to give you some of the files, and now you’re only seeing the renders of those clips. That happens all the time when projects are transported between systems without using Media Manager to copy the project to the transportable drive.

I am good with reveal in finder to find the actual assets, my question is, given an asset, can I find out where in the project it is being used ? i.e. which sequences depend on a given asset.
The reason I want to know is so I can safely get rid of offline assets that are no longer being used.

The way to do that is to use Media Manager. You use the copy function. In this scenario, you select only the sequences you want in the browser, then open Media Manager and use the copy function to copy all of the media used in the selected sequences to a file on a drive of your choice. It creates a new project too and writes that to the same location. When it’s done you have only the media that’s actually used, and you can delete the entire old project.

No david, he want to select some media and “reveal in the project” or “reveal in the sequences”.
So if you click “reveal in project/sequence” (?) to a any media in the Browser you could know where and in which sequences has been used.
That doesn’t exists.
What you have is the “Show duplicated frames” which will show the stuff used more than once in a sequence.

You are both right!
I understand about writing a new project out that only takes the used the asset. This will give me a cleaner workspace and I am in the process of doing this now.
I still would like to have been able to find where a clip is being used. i.e. if I selected a clip in the media browser, a function to show which sequences the clip was currently being used in, but alas no such function appears to be available. Maybe Final Cut X !
My immediate problem though has been solved, so thanks for the help.

Another way to see if any offline clips are being used is to select all of the sequences, right click then choose “reconnect media”. When the reconnect media ‘tool’ pops up click the “online” and “renders” buttons in the upper right hand corner so it will only display the offline media. If no clip names show up then all of the clips in the sequences are online.

My couPle tricks for this would be to…
Highlight the offline bin clips and right click and choose to label them a color. Then, open your sequences and look for red labeled clips. This is easier than just the duplicated frames thing. That only applies to clips within a sequence that you’ve used twice.
You can also highlight a sequence in the browser, then press cmd + f, find, and choose to find used media in selected sequence. In the find results bin that is created, highlight all the clips and label them a color. The clips will also change color everywhere in the seq and other bins. Do a different color for each seq and your media is labeled as to what seq it’s in. Offline or online.

its really very simple.
in the browser, copy the name of an off-line clip.
do a search (apple f)
paste the clip name into the search window, and do a FIND ALLfind all will bring up the clip, plus sequences that the clip appears in.
what doesn’t work is to do a search for all offline media
that only brings up the clips, not the sequences they are used in,
so you have to precede one off-line clip at a time.nick
