  Black Flickers in Canvas in FCP with AE Clips

  Hey folks,

  I’ve done some searching and come up with nothing online, so hopefully I’m not reposting a problem people have solved before.

  So when I’m editing in Final Cut Pro, 7.0.3, only with clips that have come from After Effects (of varying size, quality & content), the right third of my canvas flickers grey or black. Like a black or grey rectangle, during playback. Once or twice with very high quality uncompressed footage the whole screen will have black flickers across it, which will continue for a few seconds before the system crashes.

  I have an iMac (late 2009), 8GB ram, the graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce 9400. I know it’s not massive but I don’t have only had this problem once before today, and currently I’m working on a kinetic typography promo, so not super high quality graphics but FCP is giving me these errors.

  Surely if it’s my graphics card this shouldn’t be happening.

  My iMac’s under it’s 12month warranty so I plan to take it in to the Apple store anyway, but does anyone know if this could be an issue with settings?

  Hi Dave,

  I do have AE on the same machine and tried that on what I figured was the most demanding clip and it seems to have worked! So now I’m going to try it with the rest of the clips and see how it turns out.

  Thanks a lot, you couldn’t tell me why the ProRess settings work better than Mpeg4 could you?

  I like to think I know a bit but formats and codecs are something I’m still trying to get my head round.

  I encoded the rest and it all seems to be working brilliantly.
