  Short film. Favour for a friend. Shot by a pro cameraman on an HDCAM…

  I asked the producer for ProRes 422 for FCP, and I’ve been handed 279 GB of DNxHD in an MXF wrapper from an Avid. The person doing the transfer assured her that it would work, of course…

  After a bit of research my options seem to be:

  a) find some programme that would allow me to at least see this footage and transcode it to Pro Res
  b) find an Avid to cut it with instead.

  I’ve looked at mxf import from calibratedsoftware.com but the producer won’t pay for it. I’ve also looked at mxf for mac by atomic fusion but that requires FCP 7, and I only have V 6.0.6. I’m loath to pay to upgrade when we are minutes away from FCP X.

  The director says send it back to the transfer house but they’re busy and it was done as a freebie favour.

  Has anyone found another way around this problem before I try option c, which is move to a different hemisphere away from this job?

  Download the free Avid 30 day trial and edit on Avid.

  Seriously.

  If they are giving you Avid media, and you can’t get the producer to spend a dime to deal with it, I don’t see what choice you have that won’t cost you anything.

  Then take your project and media to an Avid with hardware i/o for final output, if you need a tape master.

  You may be able to use Sony XDCAM Transfer to unwrap the MXF files and Compressor to convert to Pro Res.

  Thanks everybody for your answers. I’ve blagged favours at the state broadcaster and have found an HDCAM deck and a Final Cut mac with an AJA card. I’m redigitising to pro res off the master tapes. Phew.
