  • Using Blue Ray DVD as source material for HD Broadcast

    Hello All:

    Two quick questions:

    1) Can you use a commercially available (with legal rights to use) blue ray dvd as source material for HD broadcast. Or is it better to upconvert SD material to HD?

    2) How would we import/edit the video file with 5.1 on the said blue ray dvd using FCP or Avid or Premier.

Our challenge is that HD broadcast tapes for the material are not available from the distributor. He can either provide us a SD file or Blue ray DVD.

Thanks you all for your help.

    Regards
    Ron

You’ll get better answers over at videohelp.com

I would use AVS. Find the right .mts stream and convert

Could also use the “analog hole” as it’s called. Capture over HD component/analog audio through a Kona or Blackmagic card. HDMI won’t work because of the HDCP copy protection on commercial discs.

Not sure how you’d maintain the 5.1 audio stream though during the edit if you actually needed it.

Minnetonka sells conversion software for dolby & dts to turn it back into pcm .wav or .aif streams.

In this situation probably not worth the cost.
