Capturing live from an HVX200
Posted by Buddy Englett on April 28, 2011 at 9:23 pmI’m trying to help a friend with an HVX200. It seems that when it’s switched to Tape Media it shows up just like it should in FCP’s capture window, but in P2 Media mode all it will show is Preview Disabled. Is there some setting that needs to be switched?
I appreciate any help.

April 28, 2011 at 10:38 pmYou won’t be able to capture DVCPro HD over firewire. That camera does not support it. You will have to use the analog component connections and capture card.
It does work in DV mode though, as you have found out.

April 29, 2011 at 5:02 amNo, I’m pretty sure you can record DVCPROHD using capture now. I’ve done this before…
Make sure your shooting mode is not a PN modes, won’t work in this setup. If you are going to do 720P…
– FCP capture preset: DVCPRO HD 720P 30
– FCP device control: Non-controllable deviceMac Pro 2.26GHz 8 Core

April 29, 2011 at 1:23 pmActually, you might be right Cody, but you can’t use it as a DVCPro HD fw monitoring device out of Fcp.
My mistake I mixed that up.Definitely can’t be in pN mode and capture should be 720p59.94. You can use 720p24 or p30 capture presets in Fcp, but you need to set the camera mode to 720p24 or 720p30.
Sorry for my terrible iPhone grammar.

April 29, 2011 at 6:36 pmThanks for the input, but let me add a few things.
I have FCP set to non-controllable device, the camera is set to 720/30P and I’m not trying to do HD.
I want to be able to record to P2 and capture in FCP simultaneously.

What are you trying to do if not HD? DV? dv50?

April 29, 2011 at 8:46 pmthen use the DV NTSC easy setup in FCP, and choose non-controllable device.

April 29, 2011 at 8:53 pmIf you are capturing directly via FW I think your source (in this case the camera) and FCP must have matching settings. I don’t think you can set the camera to HD, FCP to DV and have it work. Is there an option in the camera to downconvert the signal to DV when it is going out over FW?
