  • Rendering is Killing Me- Will this option work?

Posted by Jared Smith on April 8, 2011 at 1:18 am

    Hey guys
I am shooting website commercials for a law firm. The output is sent to the web developer as 640×320. I am shooting everything in 1080p just to have the option of zooming in and out and what not while in post. Here is my question though- Can I move my sequence settings down to the 640×320 since that is what I send to the web guy anyway? My concern is that if the firm ever wants to put these on TV or on a DVD, I would want to be able to move my sequence settings back up to 1080p for that without loss of quality.
    Thanks for the help

yes, but you will still need to render. FCP only does RT on exact video frame size. Prem Pro wll do what you want in RT w/o rendering

The BIGGER question you should be asking, is why are you having to render so much.

[Jared Smith] “I am shooting everything in 1080p”

That does not tell us anything as for the format you are shooting.

If you are having to render every time you do anything on the time like that that is means that your sequence settings settings do not match the video you are editing.

What codec are you editing, what is the frame rate of the video you are editing?
    What are your timeline settings?

[Jared Smith] “I am shooting everything in 1080p just to have the option of zooming in and out and what not while in post.”

That zooming in and out in post is certainly going to add some render time.

Im personally not a fan of that mindset, ill zoom it in post, or ill fix/change it in post. Shooting it properly while on set will save you a lot of time later.

Well those will have to render no matter what frame size you use.

It would be possible if a little akward to restore the project to 1080p. But at the end of the day the client has not asked for a TV quality version and have only employed you for a web advert; if they change their mind later its their problem to sort it out not yours (and they will probably solve it by paying you extra to do the conversion).
