  Showreel style

  Hi Guys,

  Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I’ll just get straight to it.
  I’m trying to put my Editing showreel together, but I am stuck as to what approach to take with it.

  I have already made specific reels for each short film I have done, using 2-3 whole scenes, but I want a consolidated showreel with all my work in.

  Do I try and show pacing, beats etc or do I go with the ‘music video montage’ that alot of people tend to use. I personally would prefer the first as I am an editor, not a DP, but if the latter gets you more work then…

  Please help.

  The montage thing is usually IMO a better way to demo shooting/ camerawork quality, or to demostrate quickly that you have compisiting and kinetic type manipulation skills… but it doesn’t do much for showing you know how to tell a story, and that’s really what editors do. Personally, I think I’d rather see how you edit a complete short self-contained scene, than yet another spazzy montage. Unless the montage itself tells an actual story or sells a point of view or creates an emotional response.

  I think you should cross-post this question to the editor’s forum to get a larger consensus.

  “Reels” don’t necessarily apply anymore anyway. Most editors I know supoly links to their appropriate material on the Web. So, if someone contacts you about a hard-hitting documentary, you point them to a great clip from the last one you worked on, and point them the page where they can see your other stuff as well that interests them. A traditional reel can only hold interest for about 20-seconds, unless you’re cutting major A-list stuff all the time and can wow people with that for hours on end.
