Using dvd footage in hd timeline
Hi all,
I will be shooting a documentary on my Canon HDSLR. There is some archival footage I need to use that is on DVDs. What is the best way to incorporate it into my film with good quality or as good as possible.

I always recommend DVDxDV Pro. Inexpensive, and it allows you to rip non-copy protected DVDs into whatever codec you’d like, which makes it an excellent choice to generate footage in the same codec as your timeline.

Or mpegstreamclip which is more the standard and is free. I’ve used both with similar results in the SD days, and have used mpegstreamclip to rip DVDs to 1080i with great results. Especially 16:9 DVDs.

Thanks guys. I have mpegstreamclip and have used it for SD stuff. Love the software. I was wondering if I needed something like Magic Bullet’s InstantHD and if it will give better quality than Mpegstreamclip. Or will it not make a difference.

I’ve always been satisfied with just mpeg streamclip or component in from a DVD player. Haven’t been blown away by any of the up-converter plug-ins, but most have a trial so you can see for yourself. If the quality of the DVD footage is good, it will hold up. If the archival is 4×3 and the end product is 16×9, consider pillar boxing instead od blowing it up to fill the widescreen.
