And with the release of FCS4, Apple drives in the final nail.

April 1, 2011 at 1:57 pmA cheap software/hardware solution doesn’t make you a great editor.
You can give anyone a mic or guitar, doesn’t mean music comes out. -

Really? So since anyone can get cheap editing software (and have been able to get cheap editing software for about 10 years now) that makes them a good editor? Funny how people think like that. Many of my clients come to us because they went to “so and so because they were cheap.”
Put a lousy editor in a 1 million dollar and what do you have? A lousy editor who’s in a really nice room.
Give a lousy editor really cheap software and a MacBook Pro and what do you have? A lousy editor with a really nice laptop.
Tools have never made the artist. The artist makes good use of the tools available.

April 1, 2011 at 3:09 pmIn Regards to Post Production Services Companies down 24%.
I know of a few local post companies that have evolved to provide pre-production, production, post, multimedia support, web development, and content distribution.
Does this still qualify a company as being listed as only post production services? As for the release of more cost effective equipment/software (Final Cut Studio). I welcome their arrival. It allows me to collaborate with some of the best in the field when I freelance, and allows me to deliver a higher end product when I work on my own projects.

April 1, 2011 at 4:16 pmYou guys are mixing up talent with employment. The video industry is following the music industry in a race to the bottom. For example,it wouldn’t surprise me if (the as yet unreleased) FCS4 has one touch presets for “zombie movie”, “car commercial”, “reality show”, “film look”, etc., because that’s the way Apple rumbles – while those of us trying to market originality, talent and experience (above mere tools) slide into the abyss.

April 1, 2011 at 4:17 pmVideo Postproduction Services in 2010 $4,276 MILLION? Hmm. Really?
I think the decline is due to more production studios doing more post in-house.

April 1, 2011 at 4:46 pmI would like to believe that I am employed because I have some talent. But hey what do I know. After all it is April Fools Day.
As for the Zombie Movie and Car Commercial presets. I am sure if that were the case, it would get old pretty fast in the professional setting. Those able to move on from the presets and create something new will continue to work and be creative.
I can imagine what the film editors of old said about the next generation of Linear Editors.
As a Linear editor of old, I remember what I thought of the first Non-Linear edit system I saw. “WOW!”I hope to say the same about whats released at this years NAB.

April 1, 2011 at 5:22 pmHmmm….if it is on such a decline, why is FILM AND VIDEO EDITOR #9 on the TOP 10 CAREER CAREERS for 2011?
https://images.businessweek.com/slideshows/20110114/top-10-careers-for-2011/slides/10
There will be a need for the web editor…TONS internet content popping up daily…more sites coming. There will be need for the TV editors…600+ cable channels with 24/7 content. That is not slowing down. Commercials…corporate video…weddings…all still happening.
The only issue is that our salaries have been driven down by a few factors. And then people overshoot and expect us to cut things in the same amount of time. There are issues, but post production won’t die, or fade. Until TV/web/feature films die. Unless you think producers cutting on iMovie are taking all the jobs

I perceive all of these to be in decline. Quality TV is slowly being replaced on cable by trash TV and reruns. PBS is on the skids. Local broadcast’s days are numbered. DVDs are on life support. Corporate video down maybe 90% from the early ’90s. Wedding videos becoming passe. No real way to make money with internet-based video.
I suggest we stop training our children to be editors, and instead teach them to be drummers – something with a future.
