recapturing problem: can’t locate timecodes
Posted by Martha Stiegman on March 24, 2011 at 4:34 pmHi everyone
The first time i captured the media for this project, i down-converted from HDV to DV. I’m trying to re-capture the material in HDV.the problem:FCP can’t locate the timecode on the first clip – which begins at 00:00:01:01.
i’ve tried manually changing the “media start” value (thinking that it’s to close to 00:00 to find the start point) but that doesn’t help. but i’m nervous about that strategy anyway in terms of complications down the road. also, the “in” and “out” points are “not set”.
i’ve tried creating a new project via media manager. that doesn’t work either.
any suggestions?
i’m running FCP 6.0.6
thanks a lot

March 24, 2011 at 5:24 pmYeah, that’s a big problem. Not allowing enough pre-roll (you need 5-6 seconds) for recapture. You have two options now.
1) Recapture that first clip manually, and manually recut it into the new sequence. Hope that the first clip isn’t 30 min or more, and used like 40 times in the cut. If it is, that’s just more manual replacing.
2) Recapture the tape as HDV and use this tool to reconnect: https://www.videotoolshed.com/?page=products&pID=41
Always allow for pre-roll. And yes, what David said is true…HDV and DV have the same data rate, they are both digital formats that use the exact same tapes. So offline/online in this case makes zero sense.

March 24, 2011 at 5:56 pmBy the original time code number of 00:00:01:01 it seems that you captured the media via Capture “NOW”as opposed to Log Clip and then Batch Capture, etc…
In my opinion you would have to capture this clip again manually using Capture Now (with a slightly different name to make it easier to figure out which clip is new and which is older) and hopefully you can time it so FCP will start the record prior to the 00:00:01:01 timecode start of your DV version. Then just reconnect manually to the new clip.Another workaround ( !!!!! CAUTION !!!!! ) would be to make your clip offline. and change the timecode in the bin adding a few seconds to the in point of the problem clip. This way you will now have about 5 seconds of pre-roll for your tape machine to lock. Of course this is assuming that you Do Not Already Use the very beginning of this clip in your sequence.
Before making your clip offline, copy it to your desktop temporarily in case this does not work. That way you can just replace the offline clip in your capture scratch with the one you saved on your desktop. This is just in case recapturing this way fails. You still have the original clip somewhere to save your DV edit.
Hope that helps.

Really? You fail to see the humor in my question?
We didn’t have computers or digital anything when I started editing.

For the OP. Invest in Pluraleys, recapture your HDV tape and transcode to prores while you are at it.
Load the media from both DV and Prores into the same timeline, follow the directions from pluraleys to sync your footage.
then ditch the DV clips and save as a new sequence.

March 25, 2011 at 8:23 pmthanks to all of you for your input – i’ve been manually changing the media start value to about 10:01 and that seems to work – and i’ve also been cursing the three editors who told me this was a good strategy to begin with.
sigh.
live and learn.
i’m having a big problem with subclips – but i’ll make a separate post about that
thanks again & all the best
