Westmeres connecting to Unity
This DOES pertain to FCP, I promise.
We have a machine running ProTools at our facility. Configured as follows: OSX-10.6.4, ProTools-9.0 (NOTE: supports 64-bit), QT-7.6.6.
The last thing we did was try to install the Unity fibre client. We tried 5.2, and 5.3.2.
Neither one would complete the install (“Install Failed” message). We tried installing the apps in different order, checking the kexts that were getting installed, looking for dependencies, checking launchd and startup items, etc…
Ultimately, I decided to see if there was an app that was requiring 32-bit mode to run. I installed the AVID Kernel Toggle and gave it a shot. Sure enough. The MediaNetwork client required 32-bit mode to be enabled. The 5.3.2 client ran fine.
The Westmere is currently shipping with the 64-bit Kernel enabled by default. The Mac cheatsheet for Media Composer 5.0.3.5 and Symphony 5.0.3 says “Avid can only run in a 32-bit Kernel.” The Kernel Toggle page only lists these 2 apps; NOT the Unity client.
So if you’re using ProTools or FCP and connecting to a Unity on a Westmere, you still need to toggle the kernel for the Unity client to work.

100% correct..! The Unity readme may not have been spelled out in older docs because 64bit kernels were not an issue “then”.
This is done as a standard procedure on all Mac built Avid systems, at least over here. Media Composer, we have found, operates odd in a 64bit Kernel, and even if it DIDN’T, it can’t access all that the 64bit kernel brings to the table. Thus, Any Avid system, we recommend, be switched to a 32bit kernel….Unity or not.
