Is there an FCP plugin out there which can change a video still to a drawing?
We are working on a film, and it would be nice to have credits where for each actor there would be a very short clip from the film, then the last frame turns into a drawing. Something like the end credits of Sherlock Holmes, although I’m sure it would be hard to do something of this quality:

You could try using Red Giants Toonit plugin. Won’t have the same effect as above but might get you close enough depending on what you are trying to achieve.

Looks good, although expensive (the film is independant, and made on a shoestring). Anyone know of any others? Also, I have After Effects – is there anything in that?

I’d export a still of the appropriate frame then open that in Photoshop (or Gimp or whatever photo editing software you’ve got) and use the “artistic” filters in that to get the look (and probably a couple of versions so that you can dissolve between them for a bit of an animated/drawing in progress feel). Then import back into FCP…

Yeah, I was just trying that now. Just created several pictures with stronger settings each time. Works quite well. Thanks!

I have an older, free copy of Synthetik Studio Artist that can do this wonderfully, with stills or video.

I just tried out the Toonit plugin. It took 3 minutes to render a 1 second clip on my reasonably fast machine. Looks pretty good, but as it costs $399 I probably won’t be buying it. The Photoshop idea seems the sensible way to go.

After Effects Cartoon filter does exactly what you want. Or pretty close.

Bernard, you can record your actions as you apply the filters that get the effect you like, save the action, and apply it as a batch action to an entire folder of stills to treat whole video sections that way.

I didn’t see a similar one for Motion, but I think this could be adapted for Photoshop (CSx Extended) or Motion, too.
