Activity Forums Adobe After Effects 3d rendering not following position

  • 3d rendering not following position

I am trying to animate an illustrator leaf I made fall down from the top of my screen to the bottom. I made it a 3d layer and to create the effect of the leaf falling I changed the keyframes positions, rotations, x, y, z and so on. It looks the way it’s suppose to when I do a ram preview but when I make a movie or export it out the leaf is not following it’s path or should I say it’s keyframe positions. For some reason it’s going in a totally different position/direction. I tried making it a 2d layer and have the leaf just do a simple fall from top to bottom and rendering out it worked okay, it’s just when I’m making it a 3d layer that it’s not following it’s path when rendering out. Any ideas? FYI … I have a 2d motion background video at the back of my 3d layer leaf. I did not make it a 3d layer.

What version of AE are you on? Are ther any cameras?

In the comp setting (Ctrl K) and clicking the “Advanced” tab, is “Rendering Plug In” set to “Advanced 3D”, if not the older “Standard 3D” is a little wonky.

Otherwise Ram preview should be what you get.

no cameras, I had it on stadard and tried advance but still not helping. That’s what I don’t get … why is not rendering like the ram preview. Instead of the leaf going down it starts going up than dissapears of my screen so I can’t really see what it’s doing

ok I just tried something… I switched the 3d view. I had the 3d view on top originally and when I switched it to active camera it showed me exactly what was hapening when I was rendering. But when I switch the 3d view to top it works fine again.

I think it has something to do with the 3d view so please help me. I think when I render it out it has the active camera setting. Maybe I need it to be the “top” camera setting which makes it look the way it’s suppose to when I do a ram preview.

AE renders out the active camera, or no camera at all as far as I know it won’t do those views like Top or Custom 1.

You can always duplicate the Top View, add a new camera (Layer>New Camera) choose the standard 50 mm and it will look the same as AE without a camera, then take the Orbit Camera Tool (C rotates thru the tool) C until you get to the Orbit Camera Tool (not the Tracking ones) then pull down until the camera rotates around to mach the top view, that you had when you setup your leaf animation.

If AE5.5 doesn’t have the Orbit Tool, then just put in these position numbers for the camera, x = 320, y = -650, z = -35 or so.

Note: If the Camera Auto Orient towards the POI is on, then it will flip or get wonky when it crosses the XY plane. You can switch it off by Selecting the Camera, Right-Click>Auto Orient> then choose and click the “Off” radio button.

If you disable that, setting the camera X-Orientation to 270 will get you that straight down look.

AE’s camera is a challenge at the best of times. Probably more than you want but here are two post about using Nulls for camera control:

Here is an AE project file (aep) for a nifty camera move Australian commercial by John Dickinson, very cool:

Saw this too late, sorry ’bout that.

Did you add a camera and put it on top?

This sounds like you have a camera in the composition but are doing your work in Front (or some other orthographic) view. AE will render from the camera view.
