  • Importing XD CAM footage into FCP 6.0.1 or Premiere 5

Posted by Lee Hanatschek on March 7, 2011 at 4:44 am

I have been provided some footage by my camera operator that was shot on a Sony XD Cam for use on Final Cut Pro and at the same time have upgraded my MacBook Pro which now has Adobe Premiere but I was unable to import the XD CAM files into Premiere as I didn’t have the correct codec.

So I installed FCP but I’m now missing a codec. I’ve downloaded the trial Calibrated QXD options which now allows me to play the files in quicktime (with the trial grey boxes) but doesn’t let me import them into FCP to see if it works.

The files appear to work ok in Premiere (with the grey boxes over them) but not in FCP. Any advice that can be provided would be greatly appreciated before I go out and buy the wrong codec.

Update your FCP to 6.0.6 which is the last of vers 6. From memory, native XDCam happened somewhere in the version 6 updates.

If you’re using Premiere Pro CS5, then it natively supports XDCAM EX/HD. If you don’t have the codec, you either need to download it as extra content or you are using a trial version.

AND… you have to download the Sony Software Transfer program from Sony to use this option. FCP 6.0.6 had complete support but needed the Sony software for import and export.
