Why am I getting “Flip4Mac” when I’m not using it??
Scenario…
– I recorded my clips as MPEG 4.2 with an AVI wrapper
– Brought the clips into Final Cut Express and created my timeline
– Exporting using Quicktime format (I have QT Pro installed)Two weird things are happening:
When I export to QuickTime .mov format, I get a “register me” Flip4Mac watermark on the final product. How come?
When I re-open Final Cut Express and it starts opening my project up, it shows a Flip4Mac WMV “Importing” window repeatedly, as it’s bringing in the clips. Why would that be?

Now, I don’t use final cut express…but I’m guessing it’s similar to Final Cut Pro, so I can’t imagine this is an appropriate workflow. Where did the source files come from? Video-Camera? SLR? Tape, tapeless? You should be working in an editable codec – ProRes gives you the most real time capabilities, and works in SD or HD…or you should be using DV-NTSC or DVCPRO-HD codecs.

There is no such thing as “.MOV format” just as you illuded to in your post, .MOV is a container…like AVI and it has an associated codec. Which in your case, seems to be utilizing Flip4Mac.

I’d guess it has to do with your first step, AVI container…once that is fixed to a correct workflow, the other issues should be moot.

My guess is that a demo copy of flip4mac is on your system. Have you looked in your applications folder to see if that is the case?

AVI files will cause problems if you attempt to edit them natively. You need to convert them to a proper editing codec before you edit.

True but Final Cut Express cannot use Pro Res. FCE is limited to DV and AIC codecs, nothing more.
So convert to DV or AIC then bring the files into FCE.

Ok, convert to DV first…that’ll probably solve it for us! Thanks.
Any worries about a generation of loss when converting to DV? We’re dealing with a lot of onscreen text that needs to stay sharp.

No.
I’m certainly not the authority here…but quicktime is a player just like VLC.

No, Quicktime is not a codec. There are about a zillion codecs that operate inside quicktime and all have the .mov suffix.
DV, DVCPro, h.264, ProRes, MJPEG, animation, etc., etc, etc. are just a few of the various codecs you will encounter when working in FCP, which is a quicktime-based NLE.
You will need to know this stuff Dane… Read the parts of the manual and articles on the the Internet after a search for “codec.” The knowledge you gain will help you for all times.
