Final Cut Pro freezes upon quit and has to force quit to restart
I’ve had a really weird problem with my FCP 7.0 system lately. I’ve done a few hours of work (editing, rendering, exporting, etc) and then I save and quit the program. The last 4 or 5 times that I’ve done this, FCP seems to be in limbo in the quitting….I don’t always know it until I try to go restart the program and nothing happens. I open the ‘Force Quit’ window and I see FCP there tho it does not say “not responding” as is usual with programs that need to be forced. I just found this problem again and this time I had quit FCP yesterday after a long export (2 hours). I went on to burn a simple DVD using iDVD and my usual internet activity of emails and browsing. Today as I went to check my email I quit my browser (Camino). I had to reopen the browser to see a link in my email and it would not come up. I opened the Force Quit window again and this time not only is FCP there, I see iDVD and Camino as well. I am attributing this to FCP since that is the only program that originally had this problem, but now is it spreading? I recently cleaned out my drives and reformatted my externals. I have at least 100gb of space on each of my drives, so I don’t think memory is the problem. Can someone suggest what I can do to troubleshoot/resolve this? Since this started with FCP I am posting here. I had no other problem with any of my other software until FCP started having these issues.

It sounds to me as if one or more or your hard drives is going to sleep and having a hard time reviving itself.
Though it’s not very “green,” Apple recommends that all energy saving features in System Preferences be set to “never.” Set them accordingly and see if that helps.

Thanks! I will try that. I do have it on a sleep schedule so as not to burn out my main drive. I realize now it could also be that my media lives on my externals which are rugged 500GB usb powered Lacies. I’ve had this problem occur even before my computer ever goes to sleep….it’s not necessarily an overnight thing.

It doesn’t have to be overnight. Setting them to “never” means never, not just a long time, not to save your hard drive, but really “never.”

Ok. So now I’ve shut off the sleep schedule. What do you think about shutting down? When I bought this Mac Pro a few years ago, it had issues about staying on too long and then not responding after long periods of no use. Problem was solved when I made a shut down and start up schedule. The current problem only came up since I became more active with FCP.

Most facilities I work at, mine included, leave computers running almost continuously, but there’s no compelling reason you can’t simply shut down whenever you want.
I suspect that you were having the same “sleep” issue before Jacquie. The fact that you figured out a way to possibly improve upon it might have provided you with some relief, but with all power saving measures disabled you should be completely issue free.
It’s all right there in the FCP manual… Setting the power saving feature to “never” is one of the first things in the section of the manual devoted to setting-up the system. Trust me, you’re not the first user who skipped that section of the literature.

You’re right. I did skip that section, lol! Of course, you were right and I have had no issues since I turned off the sleeping. Thanks much for the advice and tolerating this lame question.
