FCP & Pro Apps Video All Dark
Posted by Chris Armstrong on February 22, 2011 at 7:55 pmA couple of weeks ago I updated from 10.6.4 to 10.6.6 and installed all the various security and ProApp updates.
Since then, all of my video and image files in the ProApps (FCP, DVDSP, etc) have had a really dark image.
Now if I render this out and open it in Quicktime it looks fine, but anything in FCP looks really really dark.
I’m sure this is some silly colorsync / gamma read issue, but I don’t even know where to start to find a solution. Any suggestions? Anyone experienced something like this before?
Thanks

February 22, 2011 at 11:37 pmApple changed the IRE settings in 10.6, but there shouldn’t be a change from 10.6.4 to 10.6.6. The changes they did to the IRE settings can make a file look ‘darker’ on the screen, however it’s actually more acturate to the video. But, this should have been updated when you moved to any version of 10.6 and should affect non pro apps and pro apps just the same.
Is the video outputting okay after you do your work in FCP? Do you have a reference monitor output? If so is it darker there too?
You may want to try trashing your FCP prefs and rebooting, if you haven’t already.

February 22, 2011 at 11:52 pmIt only seems to be an issue with the Apple FCS apps. Nuke and other non-FCS apps show the files fine. (Qucktime works fine) And if I run the video out to a broadcast monitor it looks fine.
It has something to do with the way the FCS apps are showing files on the LCD’s. It’s as if it is showing it with a crazy dark gamma.
I’ve tried deleting all the preferences and reseting settings, but that didn’t help. Next step is to completely remove FCS and reinstall and see if that makes a difference.

March 7, 2011 at 8:02 pmHi,
Did you ever resolve this issue? My FCP 7.0.3
Has been doing the same thing. I see the video just fine with perfect Iris levels in my Panasonic AG-HPX170. As soon as the video is in FCP it is really dark. It even exports looking way too dark…I also recently updated to 10.6.6 What if anything did you do to resolve the issue?
Thanks…

March 7, 2011 at 11:56 pmYes I resolve it.
Turns out my “Display Profile” had gotten changed. Once I returned it to a normal profile everything looked fine after that.

March 8, 2011 at 2:04 pmChris,
Sorry I’m a bit of a newbie here, but where exactly is the “Display Profile” you mention?
Is it something in FCP or in the OS? I did a search in both and nothing matched…Thanks,
Erik

March 8, 2011 at 6:10 pmClick on OS X’s “System Preferences”, then click “Display” in the hardware category. Then click on the “color” tab.

August 31, 2011 at 7:02 pmPerfect! My display preferences randomly changed themselves from 60hrz NTSC to 50hrz PAL and changed color driver types. Super weird. Changed them back and all is fine now. Didn’t even have to restart final cut or my mac!

June 29, 2012 at 11:54 pmI’ve been having this problem for along time. I think I just figured out.
Go to the Sequence Settings (Cmd + 0) on Compressor switch to Apple Pro Res 422.
It works for me 🙂
