Reconnecting FCP footage & render files requiring re-render
I was moving some projects to a new RAID and found that when reconnecting the footage and the render files FCP was requiring me to re-render.
My system has been a little flakey lately and I can’t seem to recall if this is normal behavior (you’d think I remember since I’ve been cutting in FCP since the Clinton Administration).
Your thoughts fellow Cow folk?

Fantastic time reference.
What you are seeing is normal without using the media manager to “move” or “copy” the media.

I distinctly remember cutting a spot for an Alice Cooper concert right after Bush got elected and I was moving the files from my speedy PowerMac G4 400 to my PowerMac G3 266 via my FireWire 60 GB drive, and I didn’t have to render.
I would remember because it took about 30 minutes to render that 30 second spot, and if I had to re-render I wouldn’t have had enough time to get a Beta SP dub down to the TV station.
Are you sure you can’t reconnect render files?

My experience with moving render files is identical to Jeremy’s. In fact, until FCP 7, even using MM did not guarantee render files would remain working after a move.

Not usually, unless you use the media manager. They are disposable and sometimes unreliable, and I am sure that your speedy g3 has been replaced by a speedier intel mac of some sort. I bet your 30 second spot will render much faster 😉

Oh yeah, I have a slightly faster machine now. 😉 In fact as they were just gathering dust in a back room 3 years or so ago we had to PAY someone to come take away the G3’s. They were trusty little workhorses even thought they would crash (hard crash) daily.
