Is Apple really listening to us?
OK…. I’m sorry but its time for me to rant and blow off some steam here.
Ever since Apple gave us the ability to edit text inside of FCP using Motion templates (FCP 6), Motion has made FCP completely UNSTABLE when using Motion templates on a timeline. I’m now using FCP 7.03 on Snow Leopard 10.6.5. Everything else inside of FCP is fine.
This is incredibly useful when editing episodic tv shows. Just edit your shows and drop in your lower 3rd template, change the text to reflect the talent on screen and render. This is an AWESOME idea.
BUT…
Motion is so freaking unstable inside of FCP that its almost USELESS! What is the point in creating a tool for us to use and it not to work correctly is totally beyond my scope of comprehension.
My FCP crashes at least 10 – 15 time a freaking DAY!!!! Its gotten to the point that I have had to create all of my graphics inside of Motion, independently of FCP, render them out of Motion into my working codec and place those files on my FCP timeline and render again.
This is utterly STUPID!!!! I’ve just added time to my workflow that I already don’t have.

Where is your Motion content stored? On your RAID or on your startup drive?
How much RAM do you have and is it in matching pairs?

I had a quick play with Manifesto, a free text tool that is part of the FXFactory bundle. It looks like a powerful but simple text tool that has some really nice features that works directly inside FCP. First play, it reminded me of a blend between the native text tool and the power of Boris but a much easier interface.

It also reads pre formatted text in .rtf format. Apart from supers, lower thirds & subtitles, it also has roll/ crawl control. Might be worth considering instead of using Motion Templates.
I know it doesn’t solve an ongoing bug issue but at least it might be a better workflow.

My Motion content is stored on my system drive (but its backed up). Its just a storage area for the templates. I’m not playing video from this drive at all.
At the moment, our normal RAID setup, a Facilis TerraBlock is having some serious troubles and we have not been editing on it for the past month. We’ve had several drive failures on it and its still not been resolved by Facilis.

Oh yes…. I know all about this one. I was one of the original posters on this subject when the Mac Pro systems became available. I have 8 gig of RAM in 2 gig bars. It’s the same manufacturer and it placed in matching pairs across the risers.
Now, the only thing may be my video card. Its an ATI Radeon X1900 XT with 512 RAM.

Yeah… I though about that but I’m working with pre-made show graphics with backgrounds and specific fonts in several different text boxes.

I found performance was better with the Motion content on the RAID and not the system drive.
If your templates use any of this content this may be a factor.
I think FCP would need the speed more than Motion itself, as FCP does not use the graphics card the way Motion does.

This has been my experience since, well since you could start using Motion templates inside FCP. It’s crap, plain and simple.
I always render out my Motion graphics first and then bring them into FCP or After Effects. It’s the only way to work and the only way to guarantee 100% success with no system failures or glitches.

I ask myself the same question, Wayne. This Motion/FCP problem has been my single biggest complaint since migrating from EDIUS (which didn’t have a motion graphics capability) to Final Cut Studio three years ago. I can’t understand why it hasn’t been resolved. Until it’s fixed, I’m doing what Walter does. It takes more time, but at least I no longer go nuts over repeated crashes.

I don’t want to take this thread off on a tangent but…. when I bought my MacPro I ordered a 8 gig Ram upgrade from Crucial. So now I have 2 sticks of 1gig that came with the machine, and I have 2 sticks of 4 gig that came from Crucial…… Then machine is not useless as it is, but according to everything I read on the Cow, the only way I can have an optimal Ram setup, is to buy another set of (2) 4GB sticks. Is that correct? 2008 MacPro 8 core.
