Hi, I’ve posted this in a couple of other threads and still no one seems to be able to help me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Basically, I have a Sony HDR-FX1E. For some reason every time I try to capture recorded footage from my cam and into FC I keep getting the following message:

“Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and your clip has been saved.”

Now I have read on some other forum somewhere that this could be resolved by using a head cleaner tape, which I have done 2 or 3 times but to no resolve. Also the tapes I am using to record are brand new. So I am completely clueless.

    Thanks.

Perhaps the head clog happened during the recording. If that is the case, cleaning the heads now won’t help.

New tapes doesn’t automatically mean they are good. How they are stored, handled and used can effect performance. HDV is a fragile format that has to be treated with kid gloves.

I’m assuming you can see playback somewhere (cam? FCP? deck?).
What have you tried to resolve this besides cleaning the heads?

I have a system, it has stuff in it, and stuff hooked to it. I have a camera, it can record stuff. I read the manuals, and know how to use this stuff and lots of other stuff too.
    You should be suitably impressed…

I’ve recorded different footage since using the head cleaner but the same thing still keeps happening. Yes playback on the cam itself is fine. I haven’t really tried anything else because I’m not 100% sure what the issue is. I assumed this may have been a common problem. Do you have any other suggestions?

Hard to say from this amount of info where the breakdown is.
Here are some shots in the dark.
    Wrong pre-roll.
    Wrong capture preset.
Capture Scratch disk full, or not up to spec.
    Damaged heads.
Bad timecode, also free running TC is a nightmare in HDV.
Not enough lead recorded before the source begins.

    Hi Ash,

Did you manage to find a solution?

I’m having the same problem. I’m capturing from a Sony HDV Z1E camera to my Mac Book Pro. I’ve tried changing the scratch disks to capture straight to the macbook hard drive.

Anyone got any other ideas what the problem might be?

    Thanks,

    Danielle
