Wow, I am completely baffled by the amount of information on storage solutions, can anyone help a lost soul!

I am currently using FCP 6.0.6. on a 3.2 Ghz Quad Core Intel Mac with 8Gb Ram. We film using Canon 7d and occasionally the Sony Ex1 (XD-CAM). I am rapidly running out of space on my computer and need a decent external hard drive to work from and back up to. Ideally the drive would be mirrored for safety. The perfect solution would be around £200 ($317).

Any suggestions as I am lost.

    Is this any good?

    Many thanks in advance.

Get 2 G-drives and sync manually. You won’t have RAID1/RAID5 safety for that money.

Or get 2 internal SATA drives and do a software RAID1.

    Cheers Paul

    Hows about this:

Really should I be looking at eSATA or something a bit more robust and take the financial hit?

That’s fine, but i would go to a ‘physical’ store.

G-drive’s are great. But you should always backup important stuff to 2 drives.
    G-drives are hitachi.

G-speed Q is a great RAID5 product. But more expensive.

As I’ve suggested quite a few times in this very forum, the WiebeTech RTX series is a real winner for small space media storage. The beauty of this is that it’s a trayless SATA drive system so you can simply replace the drives as they fill up with no need to purchase another complete unit. go down to Fry’s, BestBuy or whatever computer / electronics store is handy and pick up some raw SATA drives.

Another excellent provider of storage solutions. We’re running 48TB of Maxx Digital SAS/SATA media arrays here in RAID 5. They’ve been solid going on four years now….

Walter, I’ve been considering this solution for my companies archiving needs but I have just one concern: I’m constantly pulling footage from all of my 15 external footage archive drives so if I was to make the switch from external hard-drives to internal hard drives that I insert into an external SATA reader (like wiebetech RTX 400) wouldn’t I run a high risk of static electric shock to the bare electronics of the internal hard-drive?
