  • FCP L&T Thinks P2 Clips came from tapes?

Posted by Liam Ward on January 20, 2011 at 2:54 pm

    Hi There,

I am having an issue while trying to online a locked edit. The edit media was imported off the P2 cards using FCP Log & Transfer and it was imported as QT ProRes Proxy.

Now I am trying to online back to AVC Intra with 2 sec. handles for colour. After creating the offline, selecting all the P2 based clips and selecting Batch Capture – FCP is telling me that the media originated from mix sources. FCP first opens the Log & Transfer Window, after I cancel, it opens the Log & Transfer Window, I locate the original .mxf media all in it’s original file folder structure and it properly loads all of the clips it finds.

The problem is, the project still thinks about half of my clips originated from tapes, and won’t launch the Log & Transfer Window. All of the media was transferred and named using the exact same method and it is all located on the same drive. For example, 2 out of 3 cards from the same camera from the same shoot day will launch in L&T and the third will try to launch L&C.

Any help / suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Liam.

Did you media manage the timeline first?

I have tried both with Media Managing the timeline first and without.

[Liam Ward] “I have tried both with Media Managing the timeline first and without.”

And when you media manage the timeline, same result?

If at all possible, can you save, quit and zip the project and upload it here?

    If you can’t, I understand.

    Hi Jeremy,

Yes same result with either media manage first or media manage after.

    Awesome. This helps a lot.

Is one of the clips marked “CAN_A_5 0031XA” one of the ones that won’t log and transfer?

Yes that is correct, that is one of the clips that wants to open log and capture instead.

OK. If you look in the project, you will notice that some of the clips don’t have a reel name.

My guess is that these are the clips that you cannot log and transfer.

What I would try and do is go back to the ORIGINAL project, then duplicate it to work from the copy, and add reel names to the clips that are missing reels.

I’m not quite sure this will work as this kind of type setting is buried in XML somewhere and I am not quite sure how to access it. Can you send me the original project if you can?

    Hi Jeremy,

I am on the same page as you – I was just in the process of checking the original edit project and noticing that the clips that and not transferring are indeed missing the reel information in the original project.

The issue unfortunately still remains after I just did a test by specifying any clips missing the reel info, back to the correct reel (fcp gives me the warning do I want to alter this info, I clicked yes) and then updates to the correct reel – unfortunately it still tries to launch log & capture even after fixing this.

    Here is the original:

Yeah, I’m afraid that unless you are an XML wizard, you are going to have to log and transfer the original files again and reconnect :/

The problem is that upon import of this media, the clip was not identified as a P2 clip, or got lost in an XML translation.

Some of your DSLR clips are missing reel info too.

Ahh yes I was afraid of this. Luckily, even though this is a series, the problem seems to only be present in the early episodes. Also luckily I am not re-processing the DLSR or the GoPro footage, it’s staying as is.

I really appreciate all your help on this Jeremy, you are too kind sir.

    Liam.
