    Quick question for FCP gurus…

In the manual, it has a section on the bit rates FCP uses to render the various plugins.

But as far as things go in the motion tab… like scale and opacity, does anyone know what bit rates those are rendered at?

I want to keep everything as 32-bit as possible as I manipulate my footage, and I’m trying to avoid having to go out to After Effects for things as simple as scales and dissolves…

    Any thoughts?

    thanks!

    Tom

    Hi Tom,
    You mean “Bit-depth”.
All the Fxplugs can rendered in Floating Point.
However there are still some old filters/transitions that works only in 8b or even 8b RGB.

Set “Render alll YUV in High Precision” and “Render Motion Effects: BEST”.
FC used to have a limitation on high quality rendering: When using the “Rotate” on the Motion Tab, all the Motion rendering was done LINEAL, whatever the quality option set.

Yes, bit-DEPTH! 🙂 Duh. Thanks. And thanks for the info!

Along those lines… any idea what scaling algorithms FCP uses? I’m bumping a bunch of stuff up from 720 to 1080. I understand there are a bunch of different kinds that yield better and worse results.

And then, once I do the scale, would a very slight sharpen be recommended? (I understand FCP renders filters BEFORE motion, so I guess I’d have to nest?)

I’ve tried the various red giant upscalers but was not happy with the results. The sharpen fx plug in FCP seemed pretty decent.

    Much thanks.

FC has three options: Lineal, Normal and Best but no idea what kind of filter uses.

FC makes a good job for downscaling, but I wouldn’t use FC for up-scaling more than a 10%.
You better try Compressor or even Motion (Lanczos filter).
For any kind of up/downscaling I use SHAKE.
