I have a project coming up that will mix XDCAM 1920×1080 and PAL footage. The end result will be miniDV tape, DVD but also a higher resolution version for keeping.

I was thinking about upscaling (with Compressor) the PAL footage to 1440×1080 so that it fits the sequence and so that there wouldn´t be any rendering, but it would probably still need render when it´s 4:3?

The whole deal with this 4:3 footage is that it´s supposed to look like shit and grainy and whatnot so the quality isn´t much of an issue.

And my last question is: Can you print an HD project directly to tape?

    Thanks in advance

Once all the footage is the same format, the 4:3 footage will actually not be 4:3, but have black bars on the side… actually video to fill out the 16:9 frame.

Yes, you can print HD sequences to an HD deck with the proper hardware. You’d need a capture card like a Kona card, and an HD deck to record to.

It wouldn’t be printed to an HD deck but just a regular DV or miniDV deck. Is it still possible for Final Cut Pro to do so?

Well, with some I/O cards, you could do this in real time. Kona cards, etc … but you could simply export your sequence to a DV QT movie, then use FW to print that DV movie to tape. The cards would do a better job of the down conversion I’d submit, but compressing to DV first will work.
