  • Best output format from FCP to DVD Studio

I just need to know how to get the best possible picture onto a DVD that will play in any DVD player. I can output my finished FCP project (Which was shot in HD)as a Quicktime file with the basic settings but it looks like crap. How do I configure the output as HD and still get DVD Studio Pro 4 to accept it and burn it to a disk that will play in a DVD player? Basically I need to know how to get my finished FCP project from FCP to a DVD in HD.

“How do I configure the output as HD and still get DVD Studio Pro 4 to accept it and burn it to a disk that will play in a DVD player?”

Basically, you can’t. DVD SP 4 doesn’t do HD – only SD. DVD SP the only part of Final Cut Studio that Apple didn’t upgrade last year. You can output your HD footage from FCP in full quality, and then compress it to an SD DVD format, but as you’ve noticed it doesn’t look like the DVDs you buy. Tweaking the settings doesn’t help much either, because those bigger production companies are likely starting with better footage & doing better compression than Compressor offers.

So if you want a put HD on a DVD, then Blu-ray is the way – but not through DVD SP. Maybe try Adobe Encore?

Also this is answered if you read the FCP and DVD SP manual. There is a Help selection in both apps.

You need to do a good HD to SD scale, before burning. Or your DVD will look bad.

Copy/Paste edit in a SD ProRes Timeline, video processing 10 bit.
Export, use that in DVD STudio pro or Compressor.

Or use compressor with Frame controls. Both give good SD results.
