  conversion from 29.97 to 25P

  Hi,

  I am not sure if this is in the right section but ill go ahead anyway;

  I am working on a documentary with multiple video sources. primarily we are shooting EX3 1080 25p PAL. however I have acquired some footage from the P2 (1080 over 60i at 29.97FPS) and some camera phone and some flip camera and some kodak zi8.
  the codecs of the original files are as follows;
  camera phone 29.97 640×480 MPEG-4
  Kodak 30fps @ 720 H.264 and 29.97 @ 1080 H.264 (both recording AAC 41. audio)
  flip 29.97 @ 720 H.264 and AAC.

  the sequence is set to the ex3 settings and will output a 25p master.
  for now I am converting to Pro Res and leaving the frame rates and sizes intact and just passing through the audio. but i want to cut some of the 30/29.97 footage with the 25p and I am using the audio from the 25p source, so I am getting some minor sync problems with the 29.97/30fps footage
  .
  for the online, how do i convert the 29.97/30fps footage to 25fps in order to sync with the audio?

  is it a matter of slowing footage down by 4%?

  I have never worked with NTSC before!

  Hi Chris – that sounds like a world of hate – I am unaware of the durations of your footage but I would standard convert all of your footage to the deliverable format and edit with that – in this case it appears to be 1080p ?

  Compressor can do a pretty good conversion but episode from telestream does a brilliant job but costs money – there is a free trial that transcode 30 of your footage so I would try that

  Fcp can accepts all frame rates and play them out but if you are delivering to a broadcaster they could fail it on duplicated frames from a fcp time line conversion along with you trying to sync audio from a pal 25fps source I would defiantly standard convert first …

  Hi Craig,

  yes a bit of a nightmare really, yes final output is 1080p. converting everything isnt an option, i have too much footage for that, and ill only use about about 1% of it in the final cut

  I dont have an SDI monitor or output board so I wont know what way the fields will go until i get to the online suite, where the online editor can deal with dodgy fields and duplicate frames, (ill have the original source files with me anyway) what i was asking was is there a way to convert the 29.97/30fps video to 25fps? i could then manually sync that video with my 25fps audio source using the ramped audio as a guide track.
  what is standard procedure for putting ntsc footage into a pal progressive timeline? bearing in mind it has to pass tech review for broadcasters (pal and ntsc)

  Hi Dave,

  the delivery format was never in question, it was always going to be 25p. So i could do a software conversion for now (to get accurate sequence timecode) and then re-convert the original files (and upscale them) on hardware in the online suite.

  go to a post house and convert over 50 hours of footage that i will probably use about 1% of?

  i think ill just batch convert everything in compressor and then pay for the hardware conversion at the online.

  as this doc will be internationally distributed we will need the best quality possible so no matter what we do at this stage we will have to re do it at the online unfortunately.
