  Timecode issue when capturing through Sony JH3 – AJA IO into FCP

  Hey guys,

  I’m having problems capturing some footage from a Sony Deck.

  My Setup is Sony JH3-(BNC-Composite)- AJA IO -(Firewire 9pin)-FCP. Nothing else is running via Firewire and I’m capturing 422.

  At each timecode break the deck is struggling, scanning back and forth sometimes up to 3mins to find the break.
  I have several tapes to ingest and this is slowing down the process.

  If anyone can help or point me in the right direction that would be great.

  Hi Simon,
  I’ve never worked with such a desk, but i guess that you have few control options:
  – AUTO
  -LTC
  – VITC
  – CTL
  Try the different options.

  What I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND, is why are you using the worst capturing option: COMPOSITE.

  and then:

  So, are you capturing 422 video with FireWire machine control, or are you capturing with RS 422 control?

  Or, worst case, are you indeed capturing composit video while using Firewire machine control?
  If you have an AJA, use 9 pin serial control and SDI video. Firewire control is not as fast as 422 control.
  Easy to test. do NOT have a firewire cable between the deck and other equipment.

  Two to three minutes to accomplish a single cue up for capture is NOT unusual for this deck!!!

  That’s the way it is.

  Now you know why “file based, tapeless” formats were invented!

  Don’t like the long cueing times? Switch formats or try a more expensive “studio” deck. However, even the better decks do NOT significantly speed up the cueing process.

  We use Sony JH3 decks with FCP and Blackmagic capture with RS422 deck control. It works perfectly, cueing up quickly and then immediately capturing frame accurate.
  If you turn your head for too long the job is done without you noticing.

  So, it is extremely do-able, and I don’t think using the Aja is any different.
