Convert scaled SD BACK to HD
Weird workflow – I know. I have an FCP project. Footage is 1080i. Three cameras. Built multiclips and then in Motion tab scaled them to 50%. Pulled them into a 480i SD sequence and did lots of editing with motion etc etc. This ended up on SD DVD.
NOW the client needs a 1080i version for PBS. Question: using compressor to create a 1080i QT file from this SD sequence involves re-expanding the shrunken video right? I can think of a few ways to accomplish this, but what is the best way to get BACK to 1080i while preserving all my work???

Why not simply switch the sequence settings and remove the scale effects?
(Or, remove them with an XML roundtrip)Uprezzing your SD will suck big time compared to this…

Well then I have to go back through my editing and upscale all my little clips. Possibly having to recenter stuff, etc. All the video is already scaled down 50%. Maybe I just gotta do it blah. Thought I could upscale the multiclips but that does not seen to change the tracks in the sequence where pieces of Tje multiclips end up.

Yeah but I’ve done all kinds of basic motion scaling that I need to keep. Really I’d need to select clips and add 50% to all existing scaling.

Can’t do it. You’re going to have to redo it by hand. But even if you could, it would still be flawed because you’re changing aspects. Most likely you would have to tweak other pan and scan issues. I’m assuming you probably changed positioning of your 16:9 clips within the SD frame, so when you go back to HD, it’ll never be a straight add 50 percent to each clip.
My general rule, if it was shot in HD, edit in HD. And in your case you would want to keep mind of the Sd action safe areas since the final product would be a center cut. You could always do widescreen DVD (anamorphic) as well, in which case SD TVs would see letterbox.
That would have been the proper workflow. Next time I guess.

On second thought, it probably won’t work, but maybe you can apply an effect to all the clips. A basic 3D perhaps. Something that would allow you to scale up the clips 200%. It would only work if FCP processes effects before transformations (motion tab). So, essentially, the clips would be doubled in size, then scaled back 50% – which is what you already have. But I don’t think it works that way.
