We have a mac with dual DVI currently. We bought two new 27″ Cinema displays. These only have a mini displayport input. We can either buy these adaptors that aren’t cheap (nor appear to handle the screen resolution of the cinema display) or look for an alternative consider such as changing out the video card.

I’ve been reading posts about the confusion between video and graphics cards, but nothing in particular fit with what I was looking for.

Can someone tell me what I need to get that will allow me to run two mini displayport based monitors without having to go through an adaptor?

    Thanks,
    Brian

I bought the Apple adapter – mini to DVI which works at 1920 x 1200 on my Dell monitors. Irritating yes, but such a small deal in the grand scheme of things.

The Mac Display resolution is (I forget exactly) but I think it’s around 2600X1450. Doesn’t this pose a bit of a problem using your adaptor that only provides for 1920X1200?

    thanks for the response…

I am running two Dell 24″ monitors @ 1920 x 1200. My machines are in a remote machine room and all monitoring is delivered via Gefen DVI to cat5 converters for long runs. Even if my monitors could run at a higher res, 1920 x 1200 is what the converters best support. If my adapter is unable to do better resolution, I am unaware of it. It is plenty for a 24″ display. Are you trying to run dual 30″?

You’ll need a graphics card with two Mini DisplayPort outputs, such as:
