Hi all! I have a Sony J-3 Deck and I always capture ntsc material using it. I know that the deck has the ability to play pal and everytime I switch over to use it in the pal setting my color scheme changes to B&W…. I can’t figure out how to change this in the menu setting. Can anyone help me? Maybe give me some insight on why it changes to B&W when I switch to PAL?

    Thanks,

I have a J3 and when I switch between PAL & NTSC, I don’t see this behavior. I do however, have to remove the video reference signal when I switch. Are you doing this? If not it might explain the B&W. The other possibility is the tapes are SECAM, which is similar to PAL, with the main difference in the way the color is handled.

I had a quick look at the menu and I saw nothing other than the straight switch between NTSC and PAL

Even after switching the J-3 to PAL, this really has nothing to do with the deck, but it is a good idea to have PAL reference feeding that model or at least not NTSC reference going in if it’s set to 625. PAL footage from a PAL deck will be displayed on an NTSC monitor as black and white. There is nothing wrong or incorrectly set on the deck. It’s probably because you aren’t viewing on a PAL monitor or a monitor that has both NTSC and PAL cards in it to switch between the two.
