Reduce render time for iPhone 4 footage in FCP?
Posted by Olly Lawer on November 21, 2010 at 6:26 pmHi,
Editing some footage in FCP shot on an iPhone 4. Set sequence settings automatically. Everything I drop in the sequence is taking about an hour per minute footage to edit. How can I change the settings to reduce this?
Thanks

November 21, 2010 at 7:01 pmTake your iPhone footage into MPEG Streamclip or Compressor first and convert it to an editable format first. I would use Apple Proress 422 (not HQ), or DVCPRO HD. And DVCPRO HD is probably closest to what iPhones are putting out.
I’ve been having quite a bit of fun using it and editing right on the phone. Between the 3 editors I have (iMovie, ReelDirector, and Splice, you can do A LOT with them and the quality is awesome…for a phone. I had to start a new YouTube channel just for them because I don’t want people confusing that stuff with my pro work.
But yea…if you wanna see a few, go to:
YouTube.com/tonysvideo4funThere’re a few on my regular channel as well:
YouTube.com/tonybvideoI’ve even done a rack focus demo using iPhone. Crazy. Nowhere near a replacement for the pro gear though!!!

November 22, 2010 at 12:06 pmI send all the iPhone footage through Compressor to convert to ProRes before editing.

Do you mean the Apple ProRes 422 under QT settings in Compressor? Not the advanced settings where you can differentiate between interlaced and progressive? (which does the iphone shoot in out of interest?
It’s still wanting to render the footage in FCP – but not taking as long…

November 22, 2010 at 10:00 pmYea…you can do that. Compressor will do the best job of it. iPhone 4 shoots 720p so it’s progressive. When you bring it into your timeline, after your conversion, tell FCP to set the timeline to the settings of the first clip. You’ll still have to render effects and some transitions depending on your computers specs and all that stuff but it’s the best you’ll get.
Just for fun, check out the editing and effects apps I pointed out earlier. You’d be surprised what you can get done ON the phone!
