what is your fcp frame size? the comp height should match.

864×486 is not anamorphic. It is square-pixel 16×9, which is not anamorphic.

Non-square pixels would be anamorphic, say, 720×486 widescreen.

If your FCP comp is 720×486 widescreen, you should have rendered with a D1 widescreen comp preset in AE. Then select anamorphic in FCP.

Nope. Anamorphic basically means “squeezed”. Technically, it refers to film shot with a squeezing lens (wide-to-narrow) that is then unsqueezed (narrow-to-wide) with a lens when projected.
The video we shoot is often called “anamorphic”, though it should be called “widescreen”.

Video cameras (DV) shoot 720×480, but for widescreen, the pixels are rectangular (1.2 to 1), which means that 720×480 comes out wide with those pixels. Normally, D1 has pixels that are 0.9 to 1, giving you something that looks 4:3 on a TV.

    So.
If you are going to DVD, your FCP sequence should be DV widescreen. Anamorphic. Whatever FCP calls it. Anything you put into that sequence should also be 720×480 widescreen. So you’d render a DV widescreen comp in AE, and send it to FCP, click “anamorhic” and all is well.

864×486 is a widescreen frame that looks “normal” when working on a computer, since its dimensions are a multiple of 16 and 9, and the pixels are square. However, this frame is meant for working, since there is no video format that works in that size. You need to drag that comp into a 720×480 widescrren or 720×486 widescreen comp in order to render something that other apps can use effectively and output to tape or DVD.

so i digi in fcp using dvcpro50 animorphic..set the sequence to animorphic and the my monitor to 16×9. the images look fat. the beta tape that i’m using was originally shot on HDV then a dubbing house sent it to me on beta sp with a label that says widescrean 16×9, they said that they did not do any aspect ratio convertions.

i also digi a clip just as a test in 4×3 and to me this looks better…should i be concerned of anything..would this be widescreen or 4×3???? if i edit in 4×3 and the footage looks good should i be aware of anyting when i master to tape in beta sp….please let me know..

i forget to mention when i play the footage from the beta sp deck…that’s where i would see the letterbox on my braodcast monitor. when i put the monitor in 16×9 mode the image squished. is this footage 16×9 or 4×3?
