cineform with FCP and Avid
Posted by Harry Dawson on November 13, 2010 at 12:26 amHi, I have been told that CineForm will drop into the FCP timeline for
editing, then export out with wrapper maintaining metadata (i.e., cuts and effects) and drop into an Avid timeline (Composer, hopefully DS).I am planning on capturing to the Cineform codec on a Cinedeck. Anyone
done this?Harry

November 21, 2010 at 2:14 amHello!
A file encoded with the Cineform codec will play in an FCP timeline provided the codec is installed on the machine. RT performance is dependent on the CPU, as Cineform is not an easy codec to decode. I find that the Westmere & previous model Nehalem Macs will handle it fine, Harpertowns are hit and miss.
Avid can play Cineform files via AMA; again, provided the codec is installed (free form Cineforms website)
1 thing to consider is that Cineform has varying levels of quality. Thus, a higher quality setting will necessitate a higher powered CPU (see above).
Yes, the Cinedeck will pass along all of the metadata entered into the file, and I’ve played the files in both FCP and Avid with no issue.
That being said, Cinedeck can encode into ProRes and DNxHD, and it looks pretty darn good. Ensure your firmware and software level are recent, the Cinedeck has had several critical updates in the past few months.

November 21, 2010 at 7:37 pmMichael, thanks for the info. We are hoping to edit in FCP with the Cineform codec then move to an online situation in Avid DS for finishing. On paper it seems like this will work. Right? Will know this week for sure.

November 21, 2010 at 7:40 pmIt will work…but be aware…
The DS machine needs Neo3D as well, or all of the metadata you have generated while using Neo3D during the edit will be lost.
Good Luck!

November 21, 2010 at 7:43 pmOK Neo 3D all around, right? Does that mean in FCP too, not just NeoHD, so all metadata with cuts and effects will follow to Avid?

November 21, 2010 at 7:51 pmMy apologies, I should clarify:
The Cineform codec allows for the use of Active Metadata, which allows Cineform applications (such as Firstlight) to manipulate and adjust the Cineform encoded media in real time, without re-encoding. The adjustments are stored on the computer.
Now, that media can certainly move to a different machine, and can be played, but the metadata adjustments that were made will NOT transfer over unless the proper Cineform app is installed (Neo3D, for example).
Hope this clears things up a bit!

Thank you. Yes, it still looks good on paper for keeping metadata intact.
