    Hey,

    a friend gave me some DV Tapes to capture for him but unfortunately he doesn’t know what Format there where filmed on. He also doesn’t know what kind of camera it was filmed on and I’m using my own HDV cam to capture the footage. Is there any way that I can find out what the format/frame rate etc. on the tape is so that I can set up the capture settings correctly?

    The aspect ratio is actually 4:3 so I figure it must be dv and not hdv footage. Also the camera was bought in Australia so I figure it should be PAL and on the footage are some artifacts what I believe are due to the footage being shot interlaced. So my best guess for the Footage is now that it is DV50i PAL. But is there any way how I can find that out for sure?

    When I capture the footage in FCP with a DV PAL setup the footage appears to be slightly squished.

    Also when I capture the footage I get a message telling me:
    “The audio sample rate of one or more of your captured media files does not match the sample rate of your source tape. This may cause the video and audio on these media files to be out of sync. Make sure the audio sample rate of you capture preset matches the sample rate of your tape”

    So I guess that I would need another preset but all of the presets in FCP have a 48kHz sample rate, so the format on that tape appears to be a little odd I figure.

    Any help would be appreciated 😉

    You should write DVi50 instead of DV50i.
    DV50 is a codec different than DV.

    is possible that the audio was set to 32Khz for shooting.

    Don’t break your head too much.
    if you have been able to capture as DV PAL, is because is DV PAL.
    The only thing you must find out is if it was Anamorphic or not.
    See how it looks in FC when you check or uncheck Anamorphic.

    If it was shot with 32khz audio you must create a custom capture preset for it by copying and modifying the standard PAL DV preset.

    Hey,
    thanks for the help guys I created a 32kHz preset now and it works. I still get the impression that the footage is slightly squished together, however if I set it to anamorphic it goes even more to the other extreme so thats definetely not that. But its good enough for the purpose I need it for.

    Just out of curiosity though is there any better way to figure out the format on DV tape lake a software that can find that out or is it the easiest thing to do, just to go through the FCP presets and see what will work?

    FC won’t ever capture NTSC footage as PAL, or PAL footage as NTSC. The only confusion may be about Anamorphic/ no Anamorphic, or about the audio (32/48Khz).
