Transition question
Hello, I have used Final Cut Pro for about a year and for some reason I’m having an issue with the transitions. Every time I go to add a fade or cross dissolve etc it brightens the image and then does the transition. It’s a white flash while played in real time. I exported the video thinking maybe this was some rendering issue and it is there in the exported file. Does anyone know how to go about fixing this? I’ve never encountered the problem before.

What codec is the footage? I’m guessing something like h.264 or another compressed codec. If so, transcode to prores or other edit friendly codec before attempting to edit.

I have exported the footage to xdcam 720p. Now that I think about it it has been happening with footage from my newer camera that I just bought which shoots on memory cards. I can’t import the file from the memory card into final cut so maybe when I export it something weird happens.

Pretty much anything that comes from a memory card or other digital form must be transcoded for FCP unless it’s one of the couple that it supports natively (like Sony XDCAM). If you’re not using Log & Transfer, try transcoding in compressor or MPEG Streamclip.

I do use mpeg stream clip but it still happens.

Try using Prores (non HQ).

non hq as in not HD? Sorry I’m not to familiar with codecs.

Well, depending on what version of FCP you’re using, you have options for what Prores you can use. In FCP 6 it’s either regular Prores and the HQ version. HQ is overkill, intended for RED or better footage (over 2k), and can cause problems that you can read about if you’d a search. Anyway, in FCP 7 there’re more choices as well. But you can’t go wrong with standard Prores! The HQ doesn’t mean HD…Prores will work with whatever resolution (720p, 1080i60, NTSC) you are working with and is almost always your best choice when using FCP. Hope that helps!
