  • Combining 720p & 1080p on the timeline??

Posted by Tal Mor on October 20, 2010 at 9:12 pm

Hi!! I’m planning to shoot a music video using the Canon 5D and 7D. With the 5D I’ll shoot 24p at 1080p.With the 7D I’ll shoot 60p at 720p (for nice slow motion)

I’m not sure what should be the workflow at post… I know that I should be using MPEG Streamclip in order to convert the h264 into a Pro-res format which is better for editing. I have a few questions –

    1. Can I place 720p footage and 1080p footage on the same timeline in FCP ?
    2. Will I have to convert the 1080p footage first to 720p ?? How?
    3. How do I convert the 7D 720p footage to nice slow motion ?

    Thanks,
    Tal

You are converting the footage anyway, upscale the 720p to 1080 or downscale the 1080 to 720, edit a common format.

#3 can be done Compressor also. Framerate in Video settings is set to 23.978 and then in Frame Controls> retiming pane> play source footage at 23.

Magic Bullet Grinder does a cool thing of converting 720p60 to 1080p24 in one fell swoop. Does a decent job too. or you convert the 720p60 to 720p24 first with Cinema Tools, then Compressor to convert to ProRes 1080p.

Hi there! Any advice or software to help me combining 1080p from a Vixia with Samsung Captivate 720p? The frame rate is quite different.

    Thank you in advance!
