Rebel t2i 1080 footage dropping frames in FCP
Before I get into the thick of it allow me to warn you that I am a novice whose experience with Final Cut Pro is limited to a grand total of 10 hrs of time in the “editing room.”
I recorded roughly 15 minutes of 1080p HD video (30 fps) using my brand new Canon Rebel t2i. Upon viewing the newly recorded footage on the LCD screen at the back of the camera, the footage played back wonderfully– no jerkiness or anything. Once the raw footage was imported into Final Cut Pro 5, however, the playback (before rendering of course) was very jerky, dropping frames all over the place. Due to time constraint, the quick solution was to compress the files and reduce the video quality to 720p in order that the video would play back without dropping frames. It worked, but I was sorely disappointed in the decrease in quality from 1080p to 720p.
My question(s): how should the raw footage be imported and how should it be compressed so that I can view and edit my footage in 1080p/24fps or 1080p/30fps without dropping frames in FCP?

Transcode the footage to ProRes before you edit.

Jerry, he said he’s using FCP 5.
He can’t transcode to ProRes.I think his choices (not ideal at all) would be DVCPRO-HD or Apple Intermediate Codec.
Or upgrade to FCP 6 or better.

Didn’t notice the FCP 5 use…
The best solution is really to upgrade then…
DVCPROHD would be better than the AIC IHMO.. But transcoding the footage will indeed be the way to go.

Also what HD and system are they using. 1080p/30 even as ProRes can have issues if you are using your system drive, a USB drive or a FW400 drive. Since the OP is new, that needs to be asked.
