  • RT Playback Issue

Posted by Bill Paris on October 8, 2010 at 7:57 pm

I have an issue with playback on my system. I’m editing HDCAM 29.97 Footage in Apple Pro Res HQ with a 2X3 GHZ Quad Core Intel Mac with 10 gigs of Ram/Kona 3 Card and ESATA Raid 0 Drives.

The Problem: The video is choking on playback. I should have enough RAM and the drive speeds should be high enough, but the system keeps choking on playback. It happens just enough that I’m having a hard time outputting our 1 hour show.

My RT setting are “Safe RT” “Dynamic” Playback and Frame rates.

    Any ideas would be appreciated!

    Thanks!

How long is the program and how large is the project? Any large stills in the sequence? Hmmm.

    Rich,

The show is one hour …. to help with playback I closed all sequences and created one quicktime file with the hope it would playback without issue. Still not working. The project file is 36mb …. there are a few photos, but it seems to be choking ar random locations. All the media is stored on a freshly cleaned raid.

For enough footage for a one hour sequence, that is not a large project file. It is aptly sized.

What’s the read/write speed on those drives?

And to add to that, how many drives do you have in your raid? Hopefully a minimum of 4.

    Hi Guys,

    Thanks for your responses,

I’m away from the office at the moment and will check the drive read write speeds. The raid is a PROMAX esata 8tb raid with 8 drives configured to raid 0, I’m pretty sure they’re 7500 rpm. Before starting this project, I re-formatted the the raid and all the project media including the quicktime clip are stored on this raid.

One detail that could be important? I have the project file stored on a Drobo raid that is connected to the system via FW800. I’ve never done this before, but wanted to make sure to have the file backed up in case of a drive failure. Could this be causing the playback issue?

    Thanks!

Your drive array sounds like it should be fast enough, however you need to check its actual performance.

A good way to do that is to download the AJA System Test from https://www.aja.com.

If your eSATA card is slow, it will vastly underperform. For instance, if you have the $50 2-port Sonnet card you will get MUCH slower perfomance than the more expensive 4 port model.

Maybe. Can you try having the project file on your internal drive instead. FW800 is still way slower than your internal SATA connection.

    John,

Thanks for the info….. I will try the AJA test to see how the well the drives are performing. I do have the 4 port esata card with a second 5TB raid attached. I’ll try moving the project file and seeing what happens and also try moving the QT file created from the show to a new project to see if that plays back without issue.

    Thanks!
