AVI files out of FCP
Posted by Ernie Santella on October 1, 2010 at 3:25 amI’m having a hell of a time getting good quality AVI files out of FCP. Exporting directly out of FCP looks horrible. I’ve tried my other two programs “Episode” and “Cleaner” and they still look bad.
I have a client that won’t take anything but AVI. Any suggestions to how to export good looking AVI files?

October 1, 2010 at 3:46 amAVI is just a wrapper like mov. Quality will be largely dependent on codec and data rate. What can your clients handle in terms of codec and data rate? Sort those issues first and see if FCP can export in a suitable codec and wrap it in an AVI wrapper.

October 1, 2010 at 3:52 amI’ve got very few client details. Just frame size 640×480. I’m editing in SD (720×486) 8-bit Uncompressed) Any suggestions how to export out of FCP, for example:
How would I export out a large file and a medium size file export?

October 1, 2010 at 4:12 amYou really have to find out what they are using to play the videos and how old the PCs and the OS is. Any modern PC with a half decent processor and graphics card can handle mpeg4 files which you can create easily in compressor.
Recommend to your clients that they install VLC which is a free player that will easily handle mpeg4 on a PC. If they insist on AVI then try wrapping the mpeg4 codec in an AVI file.
I have no idea what you mean by large and medium files. They are purely subjective and relate to how you deliver. If it is via email or ftp then that means something different to via DVDRom. Also you don’t say how long the program is. That is why I was asking about data rates, rather than nebulous terms like medium.

October 1, 2010 at 4:15 amI do know they want to run these video clips in PowerPoint presentations for their sales guys to use. They will run the program off CD Rom. Does that help. I’ve tried giving them very nice looking WMV files, they insist on AVI.

October 1, 2010 at 4:32 amPowerpoint just uses windows media player so we are back to the original question. What codecs can these guys run on their PCs? Until you know what the answer to that question, the rest is just guess work.
https://www.indezine.com/products/powerpoint/ppvideo2.htmlMy advice is to experiment with mpeg2 or4 to get the best quality to file size. As the files need to be small, mpeg4 is your best bet.

You can try just to re-wrap your QT as AVI (no rendering) with MPGStreamclip.
Just open the file and “SAVE AS” > AVI.
However AVI is just a container, so you must be aware of the codec is inside.
Some won’t be able to be opened in a PC. The most typical (DV, DV50, PhotoJPEG) no problem.
