  • Playback Multiclip in FCP

    My problem:

I’m doing a 8cam multicam edit in FCP.

I’ve set 4 clips a time to a multiclip and put this in sequence.

(I still have to render the audio)

I see 4 clips in my viewer and the active one in my canvas.

    Viewer is set to “open”
But when I hit space or L, the active angle is showing fullframe, and when I stop it shows all four angels again.

I looked up I should set my sequence RT-settings to ‘playback multiclip’, but that option isn’t there.
(Just ‘full quality’ or ‘Use playback settings’ and on top it shows ‘Play base layer only’ which I can toggle on or off)

Any new empty sequence I create does have that option, so I believe it has to do with the clips I use.

(of course, systems settings has set ‘playback multiclip’)

I tried using a multiclip of only 2 clips, same problem.

    details:
The clips: 1280×720 in h.264 bitrate 1.196 (should be the proxies)

    I use A MBP, 4BG ram 2,5GHz and a Lacie FW800 external drive
(I tried working from the internal drive as well, same problem)
    OS 10.5.8 FCP 7.0.2

I’ve tried exporting the clips to a lower resolution, and it playbacks fine 4 cams at once.
But when I click one angle (not even using shortcuts) it shows one angle fullframe and I can’t do anything. Also it keeps switching back to “synch” instead of “open”

Maybe this is the answer to my problem, but hopefully i’m overlooking something.

I just want to work with the actual proxies, apart from the full bitrate ones.
Also, I don’t believe that even using the lowest quality should cause problems like these.

Is it really the quality of the files i’m using that creates this problem?

    anyone…

H.264 isn’t an editing codec. Therefore you don’t get the full list of RT settings. Only codecs that you see listed in the FCP Easy Setup list allow for multiclip playback…and for the full list of RT settings.

You must convert the footage to ProRes, or some other FCP codec.

    Thanks Shane

    I should have known that.

I converted them to Proress and at least I can edit 4 streams simultaneously now.
    That’s enough for now.

    Hi Shane,

sorry I didn’t react. Your help worked fine for me, so there was no reason to check this forum again.
I got busy and forgot to reply.

    Thanks again!
