FCP crashes all the time: To many formats?
I made a clean install of Snow Leopard and FCP7 on my MacPro (2×2.66GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon-8GBRAM) as well on my MacBookPro (2.4 GHz IntelCore 2 Duo, 4GB RAM) before I started this long five month edit of a feature length documentary.
The longer I’ve been working with the project and more complex the timelines become, more oftently it crashes. Lately several times a day.
I’ve done check of diskpermissions and all that stuff. Everytime it crashes I trash prefs. The problem is bigger on the MacBook, working with the same project and the same two 1.5 TB eSATA (or Firewire800) Rocstor-disks. There is more than 10% of free space on all disks.I suspect that I have too many formats mixed on the same timeline.
Mostly it crashes when I resize the timeline, if I wait between every larging operation so the computer gets time to update the new size, then it seems to crash less.
The timelines are set to the main adquisition format:XDcam EX 1080p25 (render is set Same as Sequence codec)

Never a problem, only when the photos are to big (more than 2000 pixeles) Also I’ve been checking that there are no photos in CMYK.Yesterday I upgraded to FCP 7.03. It still crashes

Change the sequence codec to ProRes 422. Well, make a NEW sequence that is ProRes 422, and copy and paste the clips from your current sequence to that. Mixing all of these formats into a XDCAM sequence (a GOP format) is the issue. Make it ProRes and things will be much smoother.

Yeah, but I have experience with this. Trying to mix 8 formats and 4 frame rates…the majority of the footage was XDCAM EX so we tried those sequence settings. Crashed 5-8 times a day. Switched to a ProRes sequence…crashed once a week, maybe.
