Kit to record guide VO
Can anyone please advise me on what hardware I need to record a decent guide VO into FCP.
I’m running FCP7 on a MacBook Pro (2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo).
I’ve used systems in the past with a mic and a wee tablet mixer connected to the audio in. Is this the most reliable and economic way of doing it?
I need the VO to be clear enough for our commissioning editor, but it will ultimately be used as a guide for the final mix.
USB microphone?
USB mixer?
Analogue mixer into audio in????

Snowball mic from BLUEBALL mics. USB connection. GREAT mic…I use it all the time.

Think I would like a dynamic, hand-held mic rather than a condenser on a stand.
Takes up less space on my already cluttered desk!
Any thoughts?

And it doesn’t take up too much space really. Heck, Blueball even makes smaller mics. I got better sound from that then I did my boom mic with USB adapter.

If you are set on a USB mic I would suggest this from Rode:

If you are willing to invest in a mixer or an interface, I would suggest the Shure SM7B, the Heil PR-40, or the Electrovoice RE-20.

An alternative is a separate recorder with built in mic like a Zoom. David Roth Weiss also reported here a while ago that he was using his iPhone.
It has the added advantage of moving away from a noisy computer or getting the director to do the guide in another room while you get on with the edit.
