Digital Noise/chatter with picture montage
Hi All,
I have been working on a picture/new paper article montage, where I keep having lots of digital noise when the images are in motion. The media all has come form scanned images and articles mainly from an old year book. I believe the problem is the way the pictures were originally screened creating fine dots that the interlacing is going wild with. To try and fix this I have tried pre bluring the pictures in photoshop, which helps but is not completely Working, does anyone have any other ideas?

what’s the resolution of the images?
if they are pretty high rez, you can scale them to the size you need them in photoshop first, then if needed add some blur. or, you can scale them in ae in separate comps, then work with those comps in your main comp adding some blur if needed (this should work unless you need to turn on the colapse transformation/continuous rasterization option).
if you are seeing field flicker from interlace interference (you would notice this on horizonatl lines/edges on a tv/broadcast monitor), adding a little blur vertically can help. also, a photoshop action called deflickerator from adobeevangelists.com will selectively blur areas of you image that cause interlace flicker, or judder. you would place the action in you photoshop actions folder, then load that via the photoshop actions palette, then apply it to an image.. note, for best results, the image should be the resolution that you will be using in ae.

also, in photosop, filters like dust and scratches, remove noise and surface blur may help. and if you have some areas that are realy giving you problems, create a comp with the image, duplicate the image and blur one of the layers until the bad parts look better, then use masks to reveal the unblured areas that weren’t a probelm on the other layer. you could do this in photoshop if you would rather, using duplicate layers and layer masks.

Thank you so much for the help. I have been trying out the various blurs and the deflicker fliter and it seems to be working. It really is just a bit of trial and error, but your post helped send me in the right direction. Thanks again

When halftones are scanned it’s critical to de-screen them. Any good scanner should come with the appropriate software. You just need to evoke the professional or pro interface.
I prefer running dust and scratches on almost all photos that are used in AE. You don’t have to do much, but you do need to kill the single pixel detail on anything that is going to an interlaced display.
